TUCSON CORVETTE CLUB

“COOL COUNTRY TOUR”

TO SILVER CITY, NEW MEXICO

September 12th, 13th, and 14th, 2008

We will leave Tucson on Friday at 1:00 p.m. from Houghton and I-10.  We will drive to Silver City, New Mexico – approximately 3 hours.  The host hotel is the Holiday Inn Express Hotel with a rate of $85 per night (including continental breakfast).  A block of rooms is being held for us, but it is VERY IMPORTANT that you call for your reservation right away!  If you think there is any chance that you will be going, please call the hotel directly at 575-538-2525 and ask for the block of rooms for the Tucson Corvette Club.  The deadline to receive the $85 rate is August 31, 2008, or until our block of rooms is filled, whichever comes first.  The regular rate is $115 per night.

Once again this year, a couple of businesses have offered to “sponsor” happy hour gatherings for us at the hotel Hospitality Room where all beverages and food will be provided by them.  Be prepared for a “fiesta”!

The temperature in Silver City runs about 20 degrees cooler than Tucson year round.  It is about 6,000’ elevation, and built into the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.  The town is rich in history and culture.  There’s plenty of great shopping in the historic downtown area where you will find a diverse blend of restaurants, galleries, and other retail shops.

The tour for Saturday has not been determined yet due to unknown road conditions from recent rains.  Two alternatives are being considered.  One option is to drive northwest out of Silver City to the small town of Glenwood where we can hike “the Catwalk”, a National Recreational Trail.  It is an easy walk through a rock cliff canyon on a metal walkway provided by the U.S. Forest Service.  Once used by miners, the catwalk has been improved during recent years to give easy access to a stunningly beautiful area.  Glenwood is approximately 65 miles from Silver City.  There is a $3.00 parking fee at the Catwalk.  In case rain in the area causes issues with the road, a second option may be offered.  It is a poker run from Silver City to the small towns of Riverside, Cliff, and Gila along the Gila River and through the rolling hills northwest of town.

After either option for Saturday morning, we will gather for lunch at the Blue Front Bar in scenic Glenwood.  There, owner Bucky Allred will provide Bar-B-Q brisket, beans, potato salad, rolls, etc. for less than $15 per person.  Bucky serves a fantastic Bar-B-Q, and you will NOT go home hungry!  In fact, you will probably not need dinner Saturday night!  We are asking that you RSVP to Sid Hoffman by September 6th with a count so we can provide an accurate count to the restaurant.  It is difficult to organize large group meals in small towns, and advance notice is appreciated.

Saturday afternoon, we will once again offer a shopping trip into the historic downtown part of Silver City where we will park in our special parking lot for spacious parking with easy access to the downtown area.

Saturday night, we will be on our own for dinner, and once again, we will be riding the “drunk bus” (a shuttle service which runs to/from the bars and clubs) to “The Flame” for dancing and a cocktail or two.  The Flame nightclub has a 1978 Silver Anniversary edition Corvette on display over the bar – really!  Due to fuel costs, the round-trip fare on the “drunk bus” has gone up a buck to $6.00, a bargain for a safe ride to and from the club.

Sunday morning, you are on your own to leave Silver City for the return trip at your leisure.

So, please join us for a fun-filled weekend in the cool country of Southwestern New Mexico!
